The Challenge

Design a mobile AR experience that honored five decades of hip hop culture while generating hype for the museum’s grand opening. The experience needed to be fun, shareable, and culturally authentic, while encouraging donations to support the museum’s mission.

My Role and Approach

UX Designer working closely with XR developers, creative directors, and museum stakeholders

  • Designed the end-to-end AR journey — from how users launched the experience to interactive features within it

  • Mapped out interactive sequences, balancing technical feasibility with immersive storytelling

  • Pulled visual inspiration from hip hop history to create authentic design elements

The Concept

  1. Users scan a QR code to launch the AR experience.

  2. A giant AR boom box materializes, syncing to the beat of All the Way Up, before bursting open to reveal Fat Joe.

  3. Fat Joe invites fans to join the #HipHop50 challenge.

  4. Participants reenact iconic dance moves or poses representing each decade or pillar of hip hop culture.

  5. The final pose triggers a virtual fireworks show with graffiti spelling “50 Years of Hip Hop Starts Now”.

  6. Experience concludes with a CTA to donate to UHHM.

The Outcome

While the experience was never released, the design received strong feedback from stakeholders for its creativity, attention to cultural detail, and ability to translate a physical museum’s energy into a portable, AR format.
